Straight talk

Does my business actually need an app?

I get asked this a few times a year, and I'm going to give you the answer that costs me money.

Almost certainly not.

What people actually mean

When a local business owner says "I want an app," they almost never want a thing in the App Store. What they want is usually one of these:

  • Customers can book or schedule online
  • People can order or pay without calling
  • A missed call automatically sends a text back
  • The crew can see the schedule from their phones
  • Customers can check on a job

Every one of those is a website feature. All of them can be built into a normal website that works on any phone, with no download, no app store, and no separate version for iPhone and Android.

Why a real app is usually the wrong tool

A native mobile app is a genuinely large piece of software. It costs many times what a website does, it has to be built twice, and — this is the part nobody mentions — it needs maintaining forever. Apple and Google change their rules every year, and an app that isn't updated eventually stops working.

Then there's the hard part: somebody has to download it. Getting a customer to install an app for a business they use four times a year is close to impossible. Meanwhile a website is one tap from a Google search.

The in-between option most people don't know about: a website can be made installable — customers can add it to their home screen, where it gets its own icon and opens full-screen like an app. Same thing they wanted, none of the app stores, a fraction of the cost. That's usually the honest answer.

So what would I tell you?

That you don't need an app, and that a text-back button does about ninety percent of what you were hoping for. If you genuinely do need real software built — some businesses do — I'll tell you that too, and point you toward somebody who builds it properly. I don't take a referral fee for that, because taking a cut would turn an honest recommendation into a sale.
